It was days like this that Orchidpaw silently wished she could have picked a slightly easier goal to label as her life's ambition. Surely enough, simply being your clan's "best warrior" required quite a bit of effort on its own. And the apprentice was well aware of the possibility that she would always be surrounded by other cats, ones better than her at hunting, or sharper than her with tracking, or more intelligent, or more strategic. Which only made the task of maintaining her confidence even harder. Leading the clan? Now that's one goal that's easily accomplished. Biting back a heavy sigh, she let her pace slow to a lazy trot, green eyes watching as Eagleheart's tabby pelt continued to race head, taking several more strides before the tom noticed her falling behind. The she-cat made no effort to force her paws into racing up to him, and instead continued dragging her white paws along the marshy path. The unforgiving sun was high in the sky, and Orchidpaw was at least thankful for the shade of the birch trees lining the narrow trail. It wasn't much, and the white cat's pelt still felt heavy with heat, but it was something. Successful in her little task of slowing the pace without having her mentor question her, the apprentice trotted steadily behind the brown tabby tomcat. A moon ago, when she and Ivypaw had just been apprenticed, she hadn't cared at all about who her mentor would be. She knew her progress depended heavily on her and how dedicated she would be, and Orchidpaw's techniques in keeping herself motivated had been rather effective this far. And yet, after eavesdropping on the stories the elders still shared amongst themselves in their den, the little she-cat had become rather curious of her mentor's past. Despite her young age, she was perceptive enough; she knew fate had been rather harsh to the tom at certain points of his life, but Orchidpaw was eager to figure out exactly how harsh. Odds were, she'd not yet been born when Eagleheart was struggling with the loss of, well, whoever it was he'd lost. The white apprentice glanced down at her paws. Names didn't really matter. Curiosity was still eating away at her, and if she had to start snooping around to find out what her mentor's past consisted of to find answers to her questions, she would. How bad can it be? "So where are we going?" she asked, uncharacteristically cheerily, her tail in the air as she slightly quickened her pace to fall in beside the warrior. Bright green eyes stared promptingly in the tom's teal blue ones. "Are we doing any battle training?" she continued, her voice just a touch louder than it usually was.
