she'd been sent on dawn patrol, after spending half her night guarding camp. as much as she hated to admit it, the continuous duties had worn her out and a good sleep was long overdue. the minute her head had hit her nest, the soft moss caressing her cheek, a deep dark slumber overtook her. she'd been powerless, succumbing to exhaustion. even if she'd tried to fight, her heavy lids were exactly that; too heavy. it was unlike her to waste a perfectly good day, when there was prey to be hunted and training to be done. anything to benefit the clan was her soul focus. she wasn't ambitious as she was motivated, success as a whole mattered more than the success of an individual. that's why she was so particular about her duties - she spread herself thinner than the average warrior. so it wasn't a surprise when she woke up groggy and angry that it was already late in the day. so much for being productive! she'd planned to show Snowpaw some new battle techniques, and afterwards hunt a little for the elders if she was up to it. the thought of her apprentice brightened Silvertide's bleak mood. Her niece was one of her favorite cats to be around, and instead of an aunt the silver she-cat sometimes felt a second mother, or even an older sister.
tongue rasping a few rough licks over her shoulder and chest, the warrior leapt down from her hollow of the tree. Camp was active, but there was no sight of Snowpaw. could she be snoozing the day away as well? clambering up the tree to peek inside the apprentice's den, her kin's white and silver pelt was no where to be seen. she gracefully dropped back to the soft earth, frosty gaze narrowing. so, she'd have to hunt the apprentice down the hard way. though energized by her rest, Silvertide was never up to games. her mood wasn't all that lively already, but this was completely killing her patience. bounding out of camp, the light cat leaped over muddy pools and skirted thick boggy undergrowth. she wasn't following any particular scent trail, until by sheer luck her apprentice's scent faintly hit her nostrils. the she-cat had decided to check the places mentors usually trained their apprentices, maybe someone had invited her along for a session, but Snowpaw's scent drifted away from those destinations. following the spotty trail, the warrior noticed small paw prints here and there. it looked as if the young cat didn't bother to use the popular mossy trails.
concern tightened her chest as the trail neared Vertigoclan's border. the smaller she-cat couldn't have gotten so curious she'd overstep her clan's boundaries? doubt tugged at the thought. her niece was quick witted and had more intelligence - and loyalty - than that. the only possible danger was a wretched Vertigoclan cat taking advantage of a lone apprentice. Silvertide's claws unsheathed at the idea. she would rip one of those bumbling badgers to shreds if they touched any of her clan mates, never mind one of her own kin! the beautiful she-cat's pace quickened, encouraged by the stronger and fresher scents of the missing adolescent. but as the scents of her objective grew stronger, so did the scent of Vertigoclan. bursting out into a small clearing, another cat suddenly came into view. it surprised the Tempestclan cat, causing her to halt with wide eyes. this was the border, and before her was a Vertigoclan warrior....with Snowpaw's scent all around him!
