jetfang stared, horrified, as pallidkit kicked about in the water, fur soaking. what if he dies from the shock of the cold water? he found himself picking up his paws on the pebbly bottom and putting them back down again, feeling antsy. at a moment's notice he was ready to scoop pallidkit up in his big jaws and race back to camp, screaming for the healer's help. he couldn't believe the little tom had stayed afloat for even this long, and he listened to his mate's calm tone incredulously. "control your kicks, pallidkit." he made an uncomfortable noise in his throat, ears flattened in a concerned way as he watched the swimming lesson.
he had accepted by now that lilythorn was crazy and there was no stopping her from her antics with the water, so he tried to calm himself by taking deep breaths through his nose. "uhh, pallidkit, this is how you... panic about everything." he murmured, flashing an uncertain, lopsided grin at lilythorn. as he watched his son go down under the water, an anxious meow bubbled up from his throat, but pallidkit came back up almost immediately. "when you go under like that you sh-should hold your breath..." he offered, still ready to grab up the kit and maybe lilythorn too and bolt. "i'm fine, dad," jetfang pressed up against lilythorn's side, joining her closer to their son's thrashing little paws. "yeah... yeah i knew that, i knew you would be fine," he murmured, more for his son's sake than to try and bluff to lilythorn. with more strength he mewed, "you're going to be a great swimmer, pallidkit."
it wasn't so much that he thought she would let their son drown as he expected a hawk to swoop in and carry pallidkit away, or the river would kick up and steal their kit from them, or some sort of other freak accident would happen... but he tried to look nonchalant as the pretty she-cat looked at him. "just wait until he goes back to camp and tells thunderkit and blizzardkit about this," jetfang meowed, looking proudly at lilythorn. she was so much better in situations like this than he was. "they'll be wanting to learn too," he added to his son, keeping the nervousness out of his voice (he hoped).
lowering his head, jetfang gently took hold of the kit's scruff and carried him to dry land, plopping him down. "we should get him back to camp before flamingstar realizes he's missing."
